The Aeolian Harp is named for Aeolus, the ancient Greek god of the wind. Wind harps are the oldest forms of automatic music. The app uses the wind harp as a metaphor and allows the user to create relaxing animations and sounds without musical knowledge.

Touches and strokes generate visualizations and sounds which evolve in time.

User defined parameter and color schemes can be used to explore the manifoldness of the underlying particle system.

The compass can be used to locate the following instruments in the four directions of the winds: Balalaika, Celtic Harp, Guitar, Gamelan, Guzheng, Kalimba, Koto, Marimba, Orchestral Harp, and Sitar. Each of these instruments can be assigned to a compass direction with a double tap on a cardinal point.

The acceleration sensor is used to simulate the impact of gravity on the flowing particles. (You must increase the impact of gravity in the parameter settings to see the effects.) Other parameters can be used to control the duration of the sounds. Endless loops, for instance, can be created by a reduction of the evaporation parameter and an increase of the elasticity of the particles.

Snapshots of the animation can be sent via e-mail.

Recommended for headphones and external speakers (especially the speakers of the iPod and iPhone may distort high and low sounds).

Pros and cons of Aeolian Harp app for iPhone and iPad

Aeolian Harp app good for

Finally an instrument with a simple but sophisticated interface. Nice sounding and really musical results, not the robotic kind of output. One of the nicer music apps i found, and worth every penny of the small amount you pay for it. I asked Uwe to add midi-out to make it possible to play other instruments like a synthesizer with this program, and it would be far nicer than a sequencer or grid or something like that. I got a friendly reply one hour after my mail to him! He will think about it. Thanks for this very nice App , Uwe.
What a truly beautiful music/art app. Great sound and amazing visually. Definitely worth the price if your into apps like bloom. Or like art apps like Uzu. Keep up the great work and please continue to update this. Maybe some other instruments?
Awesome App. Beautifully done. At the crossroads between science, music and visual arts. Quite mesmerizing. Congratulations and thank you M. Oestermeier.
Makes good use of the iPhone chip, works very well, with fast response, lovely tone and quick refresh. I also ran it on my first gen. touch. just fine. Tech support is great, same day response. Make sure you reboot your phone after installing to ensure it works properly. Try it on speakers for more depth of sound. Highly recommend and will love it when I have an iPad to play on.
It is very rare indeed that I come across an application that is this beautiful on so many levels. Whether you are a musician, an artist or simply wanting to soothe your soul.
Nice complement to another instrument or great on its own for some ambient sounds.

Some bad moments

This app use to behave in a particular way such that I could create art with it. Now its list the subtl behaviors it used to hav n I no longer use the app.
Cant control or manipulate the color by touching screen. Better stuff out there
Wow. For a music program, this is horrible. Its also a game?? Visualizations are good but this is completely useless if you wanted to make music of any kind. Waste of money.
Ive tried this app several times and Im still wondering what its purpose is. The instructions need to do a much better job of explaining what the purpose is, and how to make use of it. Is it a "music" generator? Is the purpose to create designs? Is there a way to repeat or store and replay the "music" sounds created? If I understood it, I might give it a higher rating. Perhaps Ive got a mental block because I was expecting it to be a "music" generator like the Bloom app with which Im familiar.
Much harder to change modes and instruments. Minimal stars until thats fixed. (Fun though, when you get it to work right...)
